No Heat? Check These 5 Things First

Sometimes it's something simple. If none of these bring the heat back, stop there and call us.

  1. 01

    Thermostat

Set to Heat, set a few degrees above room temperature, and new batteries if it has them. A blank screen means no signal to the boiler or furnace.

  2. 02

    Power Switch & Breaker

Boilers and furnaces have an on/off switch, often a red switch plate near the basement stairs. Make sure it's on and the breaker hasn't tripped.

  3. 03

    Boiler Pressure or Water Level

Hot-water boiler: look at the pressure gauge. Very low or zero usually means a water problem. Steam boiler: the sight glass should show water, about halfway. An empty glass means shut it off and call.

  4. 04

    Reset Button: Once Only

If the burner has a red reset button, you can press it once. If it locks out again, don't keep pressing. On oil burners, repeated resets can be dangerous.

  5. 05

    Filter & Vents (Furnaces)

A badly clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut down. Check the filter, and make sure supply and return vents aren't blocked.

No-Heat Repairs

What Usually Causes No Heat

We find the real cause, show you, and put the price in writing before we fix it.

🔥

Ignition & Burner

Failed igniters, flame sensors, thermocouples, oil burner nozzles and controls that stop the burner from lighting or staying lit.

💧

Low Water or Pressure

Low-water cutoffs, feed valves, leaks and expansion tank problems that shut a boiler down to protect it.

♨️

Steam System Problems

Failed air vents, steam traps and pressure controls that leave radiators cold, even with the boiler running.

🔄

Circulator Pumps & Zone Valves

On hot-water systems, a failed pump or stuck zone valve means hot water never reaches the radiators or baseboard.

🎛️

Thermostats & Wiring

Dead thermostats, broken wires and failed relays that never tell the system to start.

🌬️

Furnace & Heat Pump Faults

Blower motors, limit switches, control boards and heat pumps stuck in defrost or cooling mode.

Landlords & Building Owners

Tenants Without Heat? Call Us First.

In New York City, heat season runs from October 1 to May 31. Between 6am and 10pm, when it's below 55°F outside, apartments must be at least 68°F inside. Between 10pm and 6am, they must be at least 62°F, whatever the weather. Hot water must be at least 120°F all year.

When the heat goes out in a multi-family building, every hour counts. We work on the steam and hot-water boilers that heat NYC's apartment buildings, and we'll tell you in writing what it takes to get the heat back and keep it on.

Heat On, But Something's Wrong?

Banging Pipes, Cold Radiators, Strange Noises

Not every heating problem is a full outage. These are worth a call before they become one.

  • Banging or clanking pipesUsually water trapped in steam pipes (water hammer). Why is my boiler making noise? →
  • Some radiators coldOften a failed air vent on steam, or air trapped in a hot-water system.
  • Boiler cycling on and offLow water, a pressure control problem or an oversized boiler.
  • Water around the boilerA leak, or a relief valve discharging. Call us. A relief valve that keeps opening needs attention.
Common Questions

No Heat FAQ

Why is my boiler running but the radiators are cold?

On steam systems, the usual causes are failed air vents, a low water level or a pressure control problem. On hot-water systems, it's often air in the pipes, a failed circulator pump or a stuck zone valve. Each needs a different fix, which is why we diagnose first.

My boiler keeps shutting off. What does that mean?

Boilers shut themselves down to stay safe: low water, high pressure, a flame problem or overheating. Pressing reset over and over doesn't fix the cause and can make it worse. Call us.

Is it safe to use space heaters while I wait?

Use only heaters with automatic tip-over and overheat shut-off, plug them straight into the wall, keep them three feet from anything that can burn, and never leave them running unattended or while you sleep. Never use an oven or stove to heat your home.

I'm a landlord. How fast do I need to restore heat?

NYC requires minimum indoor temperatures all through heat season (October 1 to May 31), and tenants can report no-heat conditions to 311. The sooner the heat is back on, the better for everyone. Call us as soon as you hear about it.

Do you give a price before the repair?

Yes. We find the cause, show you what we found, and nothing is repaired until you approve the written estimate.
